Success Story: India Johnson

August 31, 2015

Struggling with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), India found it hard to pay attention in class. Easily frustrated, she would argue with peers, teachers and school administrators. “I was getting a call from the school every day. India was always getting into trouble,” said her mother, Khamesha Johnson. Her behavioral issues and falling grades made her eligible for Achievers For Life.

“It really calmed me down,” said India. “Now, when I’m feeling angry, I do my breathing exercises and count backwards from 10. I’m not so argumentative, and I can focus.” Since participating in Achievers For Life, India went from earning C and D grades to mostly As and Bs.

Struggling with ADHD and academic difficulties, India was referred to Achievers For Life, where she received the support she needed to excel in math and get back on track to high school graduation.

She also discovered she loves math, and now helps other students understand the subject. “I like solving problems,” said India. “When the teacher is busy, I help other students.” India looks forward to graduating from high school, going on to college and becoming a mathematician.
