988 is the new three-digit dialing code connecting callers to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, where free support is available 24/7 for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress — whether thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. Individuals can also dial 9-8-8 if they are worried about a loved one who needs crisis support.

STEP 1: Assessment and Intervention
After dialing 9-8-8, a caller is immediately assessed regarding needs and supported through de-escalation.
STEP 2: Connection to resources
Following assessment and intervention, the caller is connected to mental health care providers in our region for long-term care.
STEP 3: Personal Follow-Up
After a few days, a crisis and 988 specialist follows up with the individual to see how they are doing and if they need additional support.
Available 24/7, the Northeast Florida 988 lifeline is supported by 211, a vital helpline that connects anyone in need to available community resources. Our mental health partners and resources can be viewed on our 211 Database.
