Three Myths about 988 and the Truth about Getting Support

September 8, 2026

Today, Sept. 8, we observe 988 Day! It’s a national day of action to raise awareness about the 988 Florida Lifeline.

Here in Northeast Florida, 988 is run by us, United Way of Northeast Florida. In a given year, over 12,500 callers in crisis receive emotional support from our Northeast Florida team by contacting 988. Today, we’re using our voice to bust some myths that keep people from reaching out:

1. MYTH: You have to be in crisis to reach out to 988.

988 isn’t only for people experiencing suicidal thoughts. It’s also for anyone in emotional distress, facing substance use challenges or even loneliness. Whatever you’re facing, big or small, your reason for seeking support is reason enough to contact 988.

2. MYTH: You can only call on behalf of yourself.

If you’re concerned about someone you love, you can call 988 to explore how you can help them, and also to receive support for yourself.

3. MYTH: You can only reach 988 by calling.

You can reach 988 three ways: dial 9-8-8, text 9-8-8 or chat at 988lifeline.org/chat. Judgement-free support is available 24/7/365.

Mental health matters, today and every day of the year. Help us spread the word that compassionate care is just three numbers away by sharing this blog post.
