Important RealSense tax-filing services update

March 30, 2020

By Carter Elliott, director of financial stability, United Way of Northeast Florida

As United Way of Northeast Florida follows recommended precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19 and works to alleviate its impact, the well-being of RealSense clients and volunteers is always paramount. Therefore, RealSense has suspended all tax site operations in Northeast Florida. We are no longer taking appointments at this time.

The good news is the tax filing deadline was extended by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to July 15. RealSense staff is currently exploring alternative filing options so we can continue to offer this service once it is safe to do so. When our plan is activated, we will share information on revised dates and site locations at our COVID-19 information directory and on social media (@unitedwaynefl on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook).

United Way RealSense staff is in close contact with the IRS regarding the processing of returns and timing of refunds. If you have already filed and are concerned about the status of your refund, please check the IRS Where’s My Refund webpage.

If you feel comfortable preparing your own return, MyFreeTaxes.com remains available 24/7 for self-filing simple returns at no cost. It provides phone, email and chat support for any questions you may have during the preparation process. We encourage you to consider this alternative since our sites are closed.

If you are seeking assistance in other areas, United Way’s 211 hotline continues to operate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials and community organizations are working throughout Northeast Florida to ensure crucial needs are met, including through Florida’s First Coast Relief Fund.

Community members in need of assistance are encouraged to dial 2-1-1, where a team of information specialists are available 24/7. You can also dial 904-632-0600 to access a United Way 211 call center specialist. Again, a COVID-19 information directory is available at unitedwaynefl.org/covid19resources.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Rest assured we are putting the necessary plans in to place to re-open RealSense tax sites as soon as it’s safe to do so.
