Success Story: Tierney Williams

February 24, 2015

When Tierney entered middle school, he had already moved from state to state many times to escape tough family situations. Shy and struggling to keep up academically, he needed a strong academic foundation and a stable environment to become successful and stay on track to graduation.

Through Achievers For Life Tierney was paired with Mickey, his mentor and a retired math teacher of 43 years. Tierney had to relocate schools once more in 7th grade, and Mickey, knowing the importance of consistency, did all he could to stay connected.

Mickey McCown is using his decades of teaching experience to mentor students like Tierney, supporting them in their educational goals and providing emotional support to reach their dreams.

“I thought you’d never find me,” Tierney said when Mickey showed up at his new school.

After three years of mentorship with Mickey, Tierney made all As, Bs, and Cs—-his first passing report card in middle school and a strong sign that Tierney is now on track to complete his education on time. In addition to improved grades, Mickey has seen Tierney grow socially by making friends, allowing him to have a healthier, more productive academic experience.

“It’s about building a relationship, a friendship,” Mickey said, and that’s exactly what it takes to make a positive and sustainable impact in the lives of students and families in our community.

Tierney was featured in a mentoring video from our friends over at Communities in Schools Jacksonville. Be sure to check out “Mentoring Matters.”
