For many families, tax season can mean choosing between costly tax-prep fees and putting food on their table. You can help make sure families don’t have to make that choice.

Through RealSense, United Way’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, volunteers help provide free, reliable tax help to low- and moderate-income households across Northeast Florida.

Whether you’re preparing returns or welcoming people at the door, every role makes a difference. No experience is required, and training is provided.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is VITA?

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is an IRS-sponsored program offering free tax help to eligible individuals and low-to-moderate income families. RealSense has served Northeast Florida as a VITA program for over 20 years.

Do I have to prepare tax returns?

No. Many roles never touch a return — greeting, scheduling and other helping roles are all essential to the program.

What's the time commitment?

Volunteers complete about 24 hours of IRS certification training, available as in-person sessions or self-paced online. Once certified, RealSense asks for a 30-hour volunteer commitment completed anytime from January to April, with flexible shifts to fit your schedule.

Where will I volunteer?

At tax sites across Duval, Baker, Clay and Nassau counties. When training begins, you'll pick the site(s) that works best for you.
