United Way intern shares highlights from his experience

December 4, 2018

By Markale Ford, Creative Services Intern, fall 2018

United Way of Northeast Florida is one of the best places to work, intern and volunteer.

During my internship at United Way, I gained experience, knowledge and professional skills. I have been part of some great projects at United Way and have many fond memories. I have grown so much, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Here are the top 10 highlights of my experience as a creative services intern at United Way:

  1. Adobe InDesign

I improved my skills by using Adobe InDesign on many projects at United Way.

  1. Adobe Premiere Elements

Adobe Premiere Elements is a video editing software. At times it was stressful to navigate, but ultimately, I’ve found it to be very useful.

  1. Public Speaking

I was requested to speak at different rallies to kickoff United Way campaigns. I learned how to speak publicly and how to adjust to an audience.

  1. Food

There is always food somewhere in the building. Food is the key to having a successful day.

  1. Accepting Criticism

I began to understand that criticism is a good thing. Criticism helped me realize things aren’t perfect and everything is a process. I am now able to work through minor details and issues more easily than before.

  1. 95th Anniversary

I had the opportunity to come up with ideas for United Way’s 95th anniversary celebration. I came up with events, social media plans and volunteering opportunities.

  1. Course skills transferred

The things I learned in class were transferable to the actual field work. I was thankful to use my skills to help further United Way’s cause.

  1. Multitasking

There were different projects I had to work on at the same time. I learned how to manage my time and complete all of them in a timely manner.

  1. Branding Guidelines

Prior to interning at United Way, I did not know branding guidelines existed. I initially saw them as something that would hinder creativity; however, in the end, they helped guide me through the creative process.

  1. The environment

The atmosphere in the office is very refreshing and relaxing. Everyone who works at United Way is professional and helped me feel welcome.
